Local Businesses
One of the key facets of our mission is to support sustainable local businesses as we continually seek to improve daily life for all here in Mosier. We're getting to know each vital business and the incredible people behind them. This is the first in a series of articles where we will interview and highlight the history and goals of a Mosier enterprise, making their efforts more specific and personal.
MOSIER BUSINESSES

LOCAL BUSINESS HIGHLIGHT:
ROOTS HAIR SALON
Walk into ROOTS and immediately feel the beauty of the space and the kindness of its owner. Jennifer Smasne opened her beauty salon in Mosier about two years ago. She chose the name because it represents several aspects of her life and personal style. The obvious reference to hair and it’s health, the use of plant based products, and the depth of her personal heritage are all part of the name choice. In addition, Jennifer has decorated her space both inside and out with lovely flowers, art and a xeriscaped garden. Her promise to give you a relaxing and pampering service is enhanced by the simultaneously down to earth but elegant ambience of the salon.
Jennifer’s mom, Dianna Calverley, was born and raised in Mosier, graduating with the high school class of 1961. When Jennifer and her family decided to move back to Mosier from Hood River, they were attracted by the people and the small town character. “It’s a small community that feels BIG”, says Jennifer. “People choose to be here and want to be part of the town’s daily life”. Her dreams include being part of a collaborative effort to shop locally, support artisans, and encourage events that highlight our local talent, such as pop-up craft shows or book signings.
She says that especially after the fires and during COVID we need to support each other and help people transitioning through this time of limited visitation with their loved ones. She and her husband, James, have felt gifted by the ability to share the Vacation Rental half of their home with residents and their relatives who are rebuilding or repairing their homes, or just don’t feel safe staying with family during the COVID pandemic.
Mosier is lucky to have this unique shop and generous family in town. Give yourself a special treat and get to know Jennifer at ROOTS HAIR SALON.
